Get the Foundation Facts
Historically, private foundations were expensive and complicated to set up and manage. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case. Foundation Source has changed private foundation creation and management for the better.
Here, we share common misperceptions about private foundations that still persist today.
Misperception: Your client needs at least $5 million to start a private foundation.
The Reality: Of the 91,000 foundations in existence today, 66% have assets under $1 million, according to IRS data. Working with Foundation Source, it’s practical for your client to start a foundation with just $250,000.
Misperception: Creating a foundation will be time-consuming and costly.
The Reality: We can have your client’s new private foundation up and running in less than a week, for less than you’d expect.
Misperception: A donor-advised fund would be easier for my client to manage.
The Reality: With Foundation Source support services, managing a private foundation can be just as easy as managing a donor-advised fund. That’s because we take care of all administrative tasks and provide your clients with easy-to-use online tools that keep them in control.
Misperception: If a client chooses the wrong vehicle, he/she can unravel the decision later.
The Reality: With a private foundation, the donor is able to grant all the funds to a donor-advised fund and close the foundation. However, it is all but impossible to convert a donor-advised fund to a private foundation. Contributions to a DAF are irrevocable, owned and held by the sponsoring organization.
Misperception: Private foundations pay exorbitant excise taxes.
The Reality: A foundation earning 5% income on $1 million in assets ($50,000) would pay just $1,000 (2%) in excise taxes on that income. In fact, with careful planning, foundations can reduce that rate to 1% in select years without affecting the organizations they support.
Best Prospects for a Foundation
Look for these qualities when evaluating your client and prospect base:
- At least $1 million in investable assets or $5 million in net worth
- A history of giving or an articulated desire to fund philanthropic programs
- Currently has a charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust
- Needs a tax-management strategy in anticipation of the sale of a business, an inheritance, or a legal/domestic settlement
- A large holding of highly appreciated stock that would incur capital gains taxes if sold
- An under-diversified asset position
- Anticipation of an intergenerational transfer of wealth or a family business
- A desire to avoid taxes on the sale of assets or upon death
- A desire to build a family legacy, make a difference in the community, pass on values, and teach financial skills to children and grandchildren
- A lack of inheritors to receive the wealth
