May 17, 2010 - Leading experts in philanthropy will review and analyze issues of capabilities, cost, ease and effectiveness in comparing private foundations and donor advised funds.

FAIRFIELD CONN. – May 17, 2010 -- Foundation Source, the nation's leading provider of support services for private foundations, announced that company co-founder and Vice Chairman Doug Mellinger will participate in a debate on donor advised funds and private foundations with Kim Wright-Violich from Schwab Charitable. The forum, sponsored by the Seattle Philanthropic Advisors Network, will take place Tuesday, May 18th, at 12:00 p.m. PST at the Rainier Club in Seattle. John Goodwin of Filament LLC will serve as moderator.

Among the debate topics:

  • What are the relative costs involved in choosing between charitable vehicles?
  • How do these types of charitable vehicles compare in terms of capabilities and “impact?”
  • What issues should donors consider in choosing between donor advised funds and private foundations?

Commenting on the debate, Doug Mellinger said, “While donor advised funds have become popular in recent years, private foundations are still today’s premier charitable vehicle, preferred hands down by the world’s leading philanthropists for their unmatched benefits, flexibility and control. This forum brings together the leaders in support services for both kinds of charitable vehicles, with the goal of helping donors better understand their options. We thank the Seattle Philanthropic Advisors Network for hosting this innovative program and look forward to a lively discussion with our friends from Schwab.”
