Private foundations are widely considered the most effective, flexible, and enduring charitable vehicles ever created for philanthropic individuals. They are preferred for their wide range of giving options, donor control, and favorable tax and estate planning benefits. Bill Gates chose a private foundation as his path from success to significance for precisely these reasons. Historically, however, the conventional wisdom has been that private foundations only make sense for a select few.
