FAIRFIELD, CT—June 18, 2012—Foundation Source, the nation’s largest provider of support services for private foundations, today announced that it has hired legal and public policy expert, Andrew Schulz, in the newly created position of Executive Vice President & National Director of Community and Legal Relations. Mr. Schulz is currently Vice President, Legal and Public Policy at the Washington, DC-based Council on Foundations. He will join Foundation Source officially in July.
Highly regarded in the philanthropic sector, in legal circles, and policy and legislative arenas, Mr. Schulz is nationally recognized as an authority on private foundations and a sought-after speaker and educator on the topic of philanthropy. As National Director of Community and Legal Relations, Mr. Schulz will expand Foundation Source’s presence within the legal community by cultivating partnership and referral relationships with practicing attorneys throughout the U.S. In addition, Mr. Schulz will further advance Foundation Source’s voice within policy, legislative, and regulatory circles, actively representing the company’s broad base of 1,000+ private foundation clients.
“Andrew Schulz brings to Foundation Source and its clients an unparalleled understanding of the legal and regulatory dynamics of private foundations, as well as an inside-track to the policymakers and pundits who affect the direction of this sector,” said King McGlaughon, CEO of Foundation Source. “As our clients actively oversee the focus and direction of their foundations, they need access to and information about the practices that maximize their ability to make a real difference. With Andrew on our team, Foundation Source is poised to be an even stronger advocate for its clients and for the philanthropic sector as a whole.”
Mr. Schulz spent more than 12 years at the Council on Foundations, the preeminent membership and service organization in the foundation sector. There, his responsibilities included providing expertise in and oversight of tax, legislative and regulatory issues that impact Council members and the broader nonprofit sector. Formerly, he acted as corporate counsel and headed the Council’s Public Policy Department, providing leadership and oversight for its legislative initiatives and outreach to members, nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and the general public.
Commenting on his new appointment, Schulz said: “Over the last few years, Foundation Source has emerged as a clear leader in the private foundation philanthropic space by virtue of its national client base and provision of best-in-class outsourced foundation management and advisory services. I am honored and excited to complement and add to Foundation Source’s already sophisticated team, with my own expertise, knowledge base, and relationships, cultivated over the course of my career.”
Prior to joining the Council in 2000, Mr. Schulz was an associate at the law firm of Dorn & Klamp in Washington, DC, where he specialized in the regulations affecting nonprofit organizations. He is a graduate of the College of Wooster (Wooster, OH) and the George Washington University Law School. He is a member of the Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia Bars.
According to Jeffrey D. Haskell, Chief Legal Officer at Foundation Source, “The policies and regulations that govern how private foundations operate are complex, fluid and subject to interpretation. Therefore, it’s critical that Foundation Source stay ahead of the curve of legal and regulatory issues in order to serve as a valued resource to the many trust and estate attorneys with whom we collaborate. Andrew Schulz is widely known for his expertise and experience in this arena. He adds considerable bench strength to our work on the legal and public policy fronts.”
According to Page Snow, Chief Philanthropic and Marketing Officer, “The Foundation Source community – its clients, partners, and philanthropic players – has expanded significantly in recent years and we’re increasingly called upon as a voice for the sector. As a recognized expert and advocate in philanthropic circles, Andrew Schulz’s appointment is consistent with the growth of our company and our commitment to provide the next generation of private foundation donors with top tier support and guidance.”
