FROM THE CEO
We are pleased to publish this first issue of The Source, a newsletter produced exclusively for Foundation Source clients.
The Source is intended to help you discover new capabilities of your foundation and introduce you to tools and services to make your philanthropy easier and more effective. Produced quarterly, The Source will bring you timely tips, answer compliance and other operational questions, and keep you informed about upcoming events both here at Foundation Source and in the philanthropic community. I hope that you enjoy this new addition to our resources. I welcome your feedback and any suggestions for future issues.

Board Minutes in a Minute
As you probably know, foundations are required to keep a written record of the proceedings from each one of their board meetings. To make the task of recording minutes a whole lot easier and more convenient, we’re pleased to introduce a new tool: Minutes Module.
There are two versions of our Minutes Module: one for foundations formed as trusts; the other for foundations established as corporations. The appropriate version will soon be available in the “Documents” tab on your foundation’s website. Once you fill out the module to complete your minutes, we’ll upload it into your foundation’s records where it will remain permanently on file. If you’ve got an upcoming board meeting this fall, give our new Minutes Module a try.
New Workshop: Leadership and Legacy
When the baton of family foundation leadership passes from one generation to the next, it’s challenging to balance the historic priorities of the foundation with the interests of new members. Developed exclusively for Foundation Source clients, our new workshop, Leadership and Legacy: A Multigenerational Workshop for Family Foundations in Transition, will help your family foundation plan for and make this critical transition.
This customized, in-person workshop will provide a supportive and informative environment for your family to discuss and plan for change, and ultimately enable multiple generations to engage in rewarding and impactful philanthropy. The half-day workshop may be integrated into an existing board meeting or family retreat at a location of your choice.
Topics to be Covered:
- The typical trends and life cycles that drive family foundations
- How to plan for succession and continuity, and the risks of inaction
- Opportunities for increased family/next generation engagement
- Designing a decision-making model that matches your foundation’s goals
The workshop thoughtfully combines presentation and facilitated discussion. At the workshop’s conclusion, your foundation will emerge with a workable plan for your transition that matches your family’s unique attributes and goals.
A seasoned Foundation Source Philanthropic Director will lead your Workshop, drawing upon decades of professional experience with donors and private foundations.
$1,500 plus travel/expenses for the Philanthropic Director.
(Workshop fee and associated expenses qualify as charitable expenses toward your foundation’s annual minimum distribution requirement.)

Please contact your Private Client Advisor. To ensure availability, please reserve your workshop date as far in advance as practical.
Improved Report Capability This Fall
We have been improving the “reports” feature on your website, and it will be ready this fall. Not only will the reports be generated faster, but they’ll be more informative, easier to read, and provide new ways to look at your foundation data. The 10 most commonly run reports, including Statement of Activity, Grant History, and Asset Summary, are being completely revised, and we’re working on improving the other ones. We think you’ll like the changes.

Help Your Advisor Help You
How much more impact could your foundation make if it had the right advice? Ideally, you should have knowledgeable counsel on everything from finding investments that align with your mission to vetting charitable organizations. However, not every foundation benefits from the advice that could help it become a more effective funder. We’d like to address this “advice gap” by finding out why it exists.
Later this month, Foundation Source will be sending you a survey that asks about your needs and experience when it comes to seeking advice around your giving. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to fill out this brief, multiple-choice survey, which will be available online. Your response will help close the advice gap and provide valuable input to philanthropy advisors. Thank you in advance for participating!
